Walk Right In, It’s Around The Back
i think “video games aren’t really the violent child-corrupting threat some parents worry they are” and “certain circles of gamer culture are incredibly toxic and can lead people down dangerous/hateful ideological rabbit holes” are ideas that can absolutely coexist
Artificial violence is not actually a corrupting influence but hanging out with assholes sure is.
the real corruption was the friends we made along the way
“Why do people like a character who’s committed war crimes but hate this other character just because they’re annoying” because it’s fiction Susan, and being annoying in fiction is a greater sin than being a supervillain, because it won’t make me want to read about them. It isn’t difficult to understand
“It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.” (Oscar Wilde)
The war crimes are fictional but my annoyance is real.
fuck em up gang
What really ticks me off when talking about ai is when people are like “it’s unavoidable” or “you’ll have to learn to use it someday” or “its going to be part of the future” like no it’s plenty avoidable actually if you have a spine stronger than a dandelion. You simply say “no” and continue to use your own goddamn brain.
That office drudgery that’s keeping a big chunk of us employed, and thus alive? AI cannot do it better or cheaper … but there’s plenty of salesmen convincing our employers it can.
its crazy how so many people do not understand that social isolation isnt just sitting alone in your apartment all day never speaking to anyone you could be surrounded by acquaintances and friends but have absolutely no genuine connection or shared values so every interaction is shallow its basically just as bad as being alone if not worse
i. love. characters that are so paranoid and distrustful of others pushing past that distrust because of a raw desire for connection and affection
knowing logically that they’re safest if they isolate themselves, but on the inside, so badly wanting to just be with someone who cares
every touch for years has brought pain, but someone offers a hug and their heart is torn in two, half of them retreating to avoid it and half of them wanting desperately for it to be real
the human equivalent of an abused rescue animal finally letting their new person pet them
that crack in their defenses, that step off the edge of total shut-down safety, that last scrap of hope left saying one last try
you guys aren’t gonna like this but if you want ao3 to be a neutral archive that will host anything that includes shit made with ai no matter how objectionable you find that
Ugh. I hate AI fics but you’re RIGHT. Just like with everything else we don’t like, we can still just. Not engage with it.
no. I disagree. ao3 is an archive of fan content. as in, created by fans. An AI is not a fan. it’s not a person. it can’t write or create. ao3 is an archive of transformative work and chatGPT cannot perform meaningful transformative work, it can only regurgitate slop.
and yes, as others have said, ao3 still does have certain limitations. You can’t plagiarize - and AI is a plagiarism machine, you can’t post ‘iso’ or 'placeholder’ fics, etc. It can absolutely choose to say the content it hosts must be made by humans without censoring the acual content.
Yeah just because AO3 doesn’t ban based on the content of fics doesn’t mean they won’t enforce a ToS. If it’s against the rules to post a link to a Patreon in the author notes, post plagiarized work, make placeholder fics, or overtag things for reach, surely it can also be against the rules to say “I made this with ChatGPT.”
Yeah, people will sneak AI fics in anyways to break the rules but there are also plenty of plagiarized fics and commission links and placeholder/overtagged fics that people have snuck in. The rules will get broken, but it doesn’t stop them from being useful defenses against the archive filling up with a bunch of junk.
i think an important thing to add is by allowing people to tag their works as AI, that means they can be filtered out. banning things never means theyre gone, it just means theyre harder (and sometimes impossible) to filter out. WE WANT to be able to know we’re reading fic written by humans!!! and a mainly-foolproof way to do so is filtering out ai fics!!! yes, there are liars BUT THEY ARE NOT THE MAJORITY!!! there are so many ai fics tagged as ai AND THAT IS GOOD BECAUSE IT MEANS WE CAN FILTER IT OUT!!! WE CAN READ FICS WRITTEN BY HUMANS!!!!
Another way to read fics written by humans is to only allow fics written by humans on the “fiction written by humans for humans” archive.
AI produced material is not “written.” It’s not drawn, or composed. It has no place on an archive dedicated to creative arts.

may be a hot take but i think the fact minors can access 18+ content by just clicking a button that says ‘yes im totally over 18 trust me’ is like. totally fine tbh. its a non-issue. i dont care if curious teenagers are looking at porn. they’ve been doing that for as long as porn has existed. id rather teens explore their sexuality through images on the internet than rush into real life experiences when they’re not ready for it yknow. the UK is trying to put stricter age verification in place (which in turn is becoming an online privacy nightmare) and like. for what. who is it helping. why is this a problem.
People panic about “But what if kids pick up bad ideas from it???”
When I was a kid, Power Rangers got banned at school because we all thought it was incredibly cool and kept trying to kick each other in the head. No-one bothered explaining “Those are trained actors and it’s all practiced, they don’t *actually* hurt each other, and you’re not good at that yet”, they just banned it.
So we went to the park after school and read Kim’s smuggled copy of the Power Rangers magazine and kicked each other in the head there instead.
(This is a metaphor, but it’s also literally true. So much kicking in the head.)
God forbid parents actually talk to their teenagers.
The solution to “kids might pick up bad ideas,” is not – repeat, not – to ensure kids never pick up ideas at all.
